چکیده

Past molecular dynamics (MD) studies of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have used van der Waals parameters from generic force fields, combined with various values for the partial charges on the boron and nitrogen atoms. This study explores the validity of these parameters by first using quantum chemical packages Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) and Gaussian to compute partial charges for isolated and periodic BNNTs, both with and without water. Then in order to test the accuracy of the molecular mechanics force field using our computed charges, the authors calculate the interaction energy between each water molecule in a hydrated nanotube with the nanotube itself using two methods: first using a quantum chemical calculation, and secondly using the molecular mechanics force field. The authors show that in order to obtain satisfactory agreement in the interaction energies the boron and nitrogen Lennard-Jones parameters must be adjusted from their usual values. Modified Lennard-Jones parameters and partial charges, obtained by fitting, are presented as candidates for future MD simulations of hydrated BNNTs.

Suitability of boron-nitride single-walled nanotubes as fluid-flow conduits in nano-valve applications

Molecular-level simulations are used to examine the suitability of boron-nitride single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) as fluidflow conduits in the nano-valve applications based on a molecular-mono-layer functionalized silicon cantilever. The interaction between the constituent atoms in the nanotubes is modeled using the Universal Force Field inter-atomic potential. Key functional requirements (a lar...

Investigating the Effects of Molecular Oxygen Impurity on the Quadrupole Coupling Constants of Boron Nitride Nanotubes: Computational Studies

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to investigating the effects of themolecular oxygen impurity on the quadrupole coupling constant (Qcc) parameters of armchair and zigzagboron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). Optimization processes have been performed to relax the original andimpure structures of the investigated BNNTs. Afterwards, the Qcc parameters have been evaluated...

Quantum mechanical investigation of 4-hydroxy phenyl azobenzene adsorption on the boron nitride nanotubes

In this study, the adsorption of 4-hydroxy phenyl-azobenzene on the surface of (4, 0) zigzag open-end boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) has been investigated by quantum calculations. In order to find the preferred adsorption site, different positions and orientations were considered. The impacts of donor-acceptor electron delocalization on the structural and electronic properties and reactivity of ...
